McAfee Total Security
Despite the fact that John McAfee himself has labeled his antivirus “one of the worst products on the f*cking planet,” McAfee Total Protection is currently included on the majority of best antivirus lists. Intel owned the company from 2010 until 2017, when Intel and TPG Capital reached a strategic agreement to turn Intel’s Security division into McAfee.
Features and pricing
McAfee Antivirus differentiates itself from its competitors by providing support for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS beginning with the basic subscription. Apps on Apple devices, on the other hand, have less features.
You can acquire a single license for any device for $29.99 per year. Furthermore, McAfee, like Bitdefender, provides the majority of capabilities for free and only adds a handful in more expensive plans.
The main package comprises, among other things, a VPN, a password manager, file encryption, and a file shredder. With an extra $5, you’ll get 5 devices as well as identity protection requirements. The so-called Family plan for up to ten devices is now $39.99 a year, but it doesn’t appear to add anything further.
Finally, McAfee Total Protection Ultimate is more than twice as expensive as the top Bitdefender suite, but it includes limitless devices. You also get a full anti-identity-theft package with specialized agents and $1 million in insurance.
Credit cards, as well as PayPal, are accepted. There’s also a 30-day money-back guarantee so you can try out all of the features without fear of subscribing to an unpleasant service. There is no free version of McAfee Total Protection.
There was one for a now-defunct program named Security Cloud, but I doubt we’ll see anything similar in the near future.
I appreciated the mobile-oriented Guest Mode, which allows you to lock specific apps and give the phone to your children to play games or view videos. There’s also the option to use a PIN code to lock apps. I should also include Home Network Security, which allows you to manage all WiFi-connected devices and notifies you to any intrusion attempts.
Verdict
Based on the results of the independent tests, I can state that McAfee performs the majority of the time admirably. However, there are a number of below-average MRG Effitas results that did not certify Avira and this antivirus in Q2 2020.
McAfee belongs on this list, although not at the very top. Nonetheless, I would suggest this antivirus software to everyone, particularly families and groups with a large number of devices.
